The transformative gift will support the continued expansion of the Music Department with a wider focus on contemporary music, enhancement of the music business curriculum, and will allow for adding cutting-edge technology and up-to-date sound production facilities for use by students in the College's nationally renowned music program, which Billboard magazine named to its list of top music business schools for four consecutive years.

The Institute will work with community colleges, in particular Los Angeles City College (LACC), to establish a direct pathway to increase transfer opportunities for students with diverse backgrounds and perspectives interested in furthering their education in music to come to Oxy. The Institute will also develop special programming and joint research activities in conjunction with the Harvard Negotiation Project, which is based at Harvard Law School and directed by Professor Jim Sebenius of the Harvard Business School. Peter Grueneisen of nonzero architecture has been engaged to renovate the Music Department's facilities.

Produced by Full Screen Films, this micro-budget movie was created by award-winning indie filmmakers Demeter Lorant (director, writer, editor) and Gábor Sz. Nagy (producer). Filmed in just 10 days by a dedicated three-man crew in the Hungarian countryside, the story unfolds in a creepy house where the protagonist must stay for several days, completing tasks for a stranger who has kidnapped his family. The film combines elements of "The Babadook" and "Jacob’s Ladder," with a hint of Lovecraftian horror. The movie was shot at the end of April and is in post-production, the planned release is the fall of 2024.

Logline: In the house of nightmares, every instruction is a step closer to saving his family... or losing himself.

The movie features Nicolas Hackenberg, a French actor residing in Hungary, in his first leading role. Previously, he has appeared in "Fauda," "FBI International," and various other TV series and films. Working with him was a unique experience, as he carries the film with more than two-thirds of the scenes focusing solely on him. This made for a challenging shoot, with minimal downtime as he was constantly on camera and in character. He delivered an outstanding performance as Josh, the cop whose family has been kidnapped.

Rebecka Johnston (“Midsommar”, “The Strangers - Chapter 1.”) plays the owner of the house where the majority of the movie is set, she is a very talented Swedish actress living in Budapest, Hungary.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., June 4, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Nickelodeon revealed the nominees for its annual slime-filled Kids' Choice Awards, with over 50 first-time nominees from across the worlds of film, television, music, sports and more. Hosted by SpongeBob SquarePants (voiced by Tom Kenny) and Patrick Star (voiced by Bill Fagerbakke), Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2024 will premiere live from their undersea home of Bikini Bottom on Saturday, July 13, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).

First-time nominees include Halle Bailey, Austin Butler, Sabrina Carpenter, Kai Cenat, Timothée Chalamet, Luke Combs, Ariana DeBose, Ayo Edebiri, Ryan Gosling, Reneé Rapp, Margot Robbie, Paul Rudd, among others. Leading the pack with six nods is Taylor Swift, followed by Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo and Justin Timberlake, with four nominations each. Musical performances and presenters will be announced at a later date.

KCA will continue to put kids and families in control as they are transported to the biggest party of the summer in Bikini Bottom. This year's show will also feature: enhanced graphics, high-tech motion capture and augmented reality; fun celebrity collaborations and stunts as Nickelodeon celebrates SpongeBob SquarePants' special birthday; and the net's signature orange blimp award and epic slimings. Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2024 will simulcast across Nickelodeon, TeenNick, Nicktoons, the Nick Jr. channel, TVLand, CMT and MTV2.

Beginning today, fans in the U.S. can cast their votes across 33 categories on the official Kids' Choice Awards website, KidsChoiceAwards.com. International markets will also open voting today, including additional regional categories.

Overall, distributions improved by 8.9% from 2022. This was primarily driven by an increase of more than 29% in audiovisual post-synchronization, incorporating higher organic consumption along with the introduction of revenue from additional services. International collections also demonstrated strong progress, recording a 20% increase. Additionally, physical distribution channels experienced an 8% uplift driven by the ongoing vigor of vinyl, while online streaming services saw a continued growth of 3% from the previous year.

Saturday, July 27, 7:30 p.m.: Alarm Will Sound will perform eight new works by Resident Composers at the Missouri Theatre.

Distinguished Guest Composers

George Lewis is an American composer, musicologist, and trombonist. He is the Edwin H. Case Professor of American Music and Area Chair in Composition at Columbia University. Lewis's central areas of scholarship include the history and criticism of experimental music, computer music, interactive media, and improvisation, particularly as these areas become entangled with the dynamics of race, gender, and decolonization. Recent compositions include "Celebration," "The Faculty of Sensing" and "Tightrope."

Mary Kouyoumdjian is a composer and documentarian with projects ranging from concert works to multimedia collaborations and film scores. As a first generation Armenian-American and having come from a family directly affected by the Lebanese Civil War and Armenian Genocide, she uses a sonic palette that draws on her heritage, interest in music as documentary, and background in experimental composition to progressively blend the old with the new. A strong believer in freedom of speech and the arts as an amplifier of expression, her compositional work often integrates recorded testimonies with resilient individuals and field recordings of place to invite empathy by humanizing complex experiences around social and political conflict. Her work "Paper Pianos" was a finalist for the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in music.

During the festival, Lewis and Kouyoumdjian will lead workshops and give private lessons to the Resident Composers.

The Resident Composers chosen for the festival and the titles of their compositions are Lila Meretzky, "DINNER"; Mahbod Shirvani, "Sounds for Nothing"; Benjamin Scheuer, "Trittbrettfahrer"; Claire Hu, "the growing pull of your softening hand"; Lukáš Janata, "GRAAL"; Liu Yingting, "Kill a Cow!"; Davor Vincze, "Ashes"; and ess whiteley, "Machine Spectre."

Alarm Will Sound 

Alarm Will Sound is a 20-member band committed to innovative performances and recordings of today's music. They have established a reputation for performing demanding music with energetic skill. Their performances have been described as "equal parts exuberance, nonchalance, and virtuosity" by the Financial Times of London and as "a triumph of ensemble playing" by the San Francisco Chronicle. Musician, composer, music producer, audio engineer, and educator Somesh Das is set to release his highly anticipated debut album as a band leader and front man in a jazz piano trio format. The album will feature renowned bassist Andreas Farmakalidis (Steven Adler, Marty Friedman, Candlebox) and Latin Grammy scholarship recipient and world-touring drummer JP Faundez (Arturo Sandoval, Jesus Molina).

Born in Australia and now based in Los Angeles, Das is a recent graduate and Achievement Scholarship student of the world-renowned Berklee College of Music. Having made the move to LA in 2023, he has been immersing himself in the music scene as a composer for TV, music producer, touring keyboardist, and music educator. Das has collaborated with notable figures, such as 2024 Grammy Winner Laufey on music transcription works of her award-winning catalog, and actor/director Daniel Augustin from HBO's 'Rap Shit' and Hulu's "How I Met Your Father" on scoring work for the television series 'Kinfolk'. The series aired at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival and received nominations in seven categories at the 2024 Indie Series Awards.

With influences spanning Bill Evans, Robert Glasper, Hiromi, Liszt, Debussy, Quincy Jones, and Coldplay, the album promises to present a unique blend of jazz, classical, and contemporary styles. Das’ last performance as a pianist and bandleader for his original work was in 2018 at the famed Palau De Les Arts De La Reina Sofia: Un Lago De Conciertes music series in Valencia, Spain. 2024 PTP Pink Paper: 2SLGBTQIA+ Representation in Canada’s Screen Industries

Study finds progress but significant work yet to be done for meaningful 2SLGBTQIA+ representation

The PTP Pink Paper comes at a time when representation is more important than ever as data shows support for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights and visibility in Canada is on the decline. The PTP Pink Paper’s insights reflect the same sentiment with 93% of industry professionals agreeing that 2SLGBTQIA+ representation on Canadian screens is extremely important to them and relates to how they are viewed and treated in society.

"Historically, queer and trans screen representation has been painful – relying on twisted stereotypes and degrading vilification. Our stories have been censored, revised or overlooked," says Walberg. "There has been an explosion of queer characters recently, but our research reveals important issues and gaps, both in screen portrayals and the experience of industry workers.

The PTP Pink Paper research was conducted from late 2023 through to 2024 and covers English and French markets in Canada. The project was commissioned by Pink Triangle Press and conducted by Maru Matchbox and Signal Hill Insights research companies, and written by academic Alex Custodio. Surveying professionals in film, TV, streaming and videogame industries, the PTP Pink Paper findings show alignment in the need for representation.

While 85% of professionals observe that the on-screen portrayal of 2SLGBTQIA+ characters has improved in the past 5 years, there remains a significant gap in the amount, nature of representation and the narrowness of representation within 2SLGBTQIA+. Specifically the amount of queer and trans characters in Canadian media and how 2SLGBTQIA+ people are portrayed.

There are notable barriers to driving representation on screen including a lack of 2SLGBTQIA+ decision-makers, cautious industry executives, storytelling tropes, and stereotypes to name a few. The vast majority of industry professionals agree that portrayal of 2SLGBTQIA+ characters is frequently superficial (85%), stereotypical (84%), or focused solely on trauma (88%).

To present the findings, Walberg was joined on a panel by Actor/Writer/Producer Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek), Actress Cassandra James (General Hospital), Michelle Mama, co-founder of Gay Agenda, and Writer/Actor/Producer Alexander Nunez (Moonshine) of Border2Border Entertainment moderated by Michael Serapio of CPAC.

The survey’s results show there is still work to be done with 82% of respondents believing 2SLGBTQIA+ representation is uneven. Two-Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse character identities are seen to be more underrepresented than other 2SLGBTQIA+ identities, especially compared to gay men. While gay men are the best-represented group, they still only represent 7% presence in the top shows in English and French Canada.

Pink Triangle Press hopes that the inaugural PTP Pink Paper will help drive effective representation both on screen and in the funding process in Canada and globally. The findings support this with 66% of Canadian media industry professionals not believing that Canadian-funded content sufficiently supports the inclusion of 2SLGBTQIA+ themes, stories, and professionals.

2SLGBTQIA+ identities remain critically underrepresented across the Canadian media landscape. Nuanced, meaningful, and authentic 2SLGBTQIA+ stories are particularly lacking.

There remains an immense opportunity to better represent queer voices on-screen with ​​90% of professionals agreeing that Canadian audiences want to see authentic 2SLGBTQIA+ representation, two-thirds of whom feel strongly about this sentiment.

Overall, those who offered their voices to the PTP Pink Paper want to see more authentic, complex, and inclusive representation, a wider variety of narratives, genres and themes that include 2SLGBTQIA+ characters, behind-the-scenes representation at all levels and increased financial, promotional, and educational support for 2SLGBTQIA+ content and professionals.
